WHEN TO FILE

Disability: When to File

When To File:

When should you file your disability claim? It’s a very personal decision when to go on disability. But once you’ve made that decision you need to contact the insurance company because most policies say you must let them know within 30 or 60 days that you are unable to work. You can’t wait six months, eight months, a year and then file, and I’ll tell you why. The insurance company is entitled to investigate your claim to determine whether you are entitled to benefits. And if you don’t give them fair notice of your disability, you have handicapped them to investigate your case. So you need to file for disability when you can no longer fulfill your obligations in the workplace and that you have the agreement of your doctor, whoever is going to support your case, that they will complete forms on your behalf, and you’ve informed those that are close to you that you’re going go be filing disability. And that’s when you need to file.
